Principal End of Year Letter

We have come to the end of the year!  We have made it through several challenges in our learning process throughout the year and the pandemic experience.  We want to thank everyone for the effort that you have given to make it a successful year.  On Monday, May 24, we said goodbye to our final class at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.  In just a few weeks, we will officially become John R. Lewis Middle School.  We end this school year by making history and stepping into next year with new possibilities.  We are planning a day of celebration on July 1 during summer school.  Please watch the website for information and updates throughout the summer.

We also want to thank all the staff, parents and students who contributed to our new Mission and Vision Statements for John Lewis MS as we move forward into the new school year:

JLMS Vision: Empowering our students today, building our community for tomorrow

JLMS Mission:    John Lewis MS cultivates ethical, responsible individuals; empowers our diverse community; and fosters high expectations, equity, respect, support, and grace for all.

In just a few days our summer school will begin and we will continue to work on learning and engaging in school.  We want to encourage all students, whether attending summer school or enjoying other summer activities,  to engage in continual learning across the summer.  The summer is a great time for lots of reading and exploring the world around us.  We also encourage all students to log in to all learning apps (Lexia, Achieve, MyOn, Dreambox, and Mathia)  two to three times a week.  Time spent in learning apps will help your student continue to hone reading and math skills.  Also, please remember that all activities on the computer are monitored constantly and anything inappropriate is always reported to the school.

Included in this letter is the  2021 - 22 School Calendar.  Please remember that as we are getting out earlier this year, therefore, we start back earlier in the fall - August 12th is the first day of school!  We need all students ready to go from day one as we will be spending time catching up after the pandemic.  All Jaguars are expected to stay “on-track” with a 95% attendance rate (or higher!).

We are currently working on student schedules for next year, and by the end of June students can begin looking at their schedules on-line via their student portal.  There may be changes to schedules over the summer, but we expect schedules will be finalized by August 1.

For our incoming 6th grade students, we will host a John Lewis 6th Grade Summer Orientation on  July 13 - 14 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon.   This will be a great time to engage with your new teachers and become familiar with the school before the fall.  We look forward to meeting all of our sixth graders.  As more information becomes available,  we will update our website and send communication to 6th grade parents and guardians.

Finally, please expect school bus assignments a few days before school starts if you live more than 1.5 miles from John Lewis MS.  If you do not qualify for a school bus and are in need of transportation, please email to inquire about other options.

Wishing you a safe, fun-filled summer!  Looking forward to seeing you in the fall!
